This week has seen Gemma’s birthday- 21 again , lots of rain- wet again and planning for a busy few weeks- packing kit again!
We also have had the great pleasure of seeing some of our favourite people Mark and Sarah Bell or Kinky and Quirky as you may know them at the fantastic new group art show A Brush with Burlesque they are curating at East Gallery on London’s Brick Lane.
Mark and Sarah run the most fantastic Burlesque events in the South West of England; bringing the best of international Burlesque and cabaret to a discerning, party crowd at sell out events.
We have had the pleasure of working with them on a number of occasions traveling down from London for their shows – they are that good!
Mark and Sarah also run Cockington based studio A Kick Up The Arts offering accessible, affordable and highly original one off pieces mostly produced by Mark . Much of the featured work is based on the colourful world of circus, cabaret and burlesque but we are able to offer striking portraits and commissioned pieces too.
Wednesday May 2nd saw the Private View of A Brush with Burlesque, Verity was a bit under the weather so Gemma went alone and felt a bit lost without her partner in crime!
A Brush with Burlesque brings together a fabulous collective of British based artists who currently paint or illustrate the vibrant British burlesque scene.
The aim of the exhibition was to offer the opportunity to artists based all over the UK to show their work together for the first time in a London gallery at the same time as London Burlesque Week.
Gemma spied lots of movers and shakers from the London Vintage and Burlesque scenes including Tigz Rice- Burlesque photographer extraordinaire and a competitor herself in The World Burlesque Games as her predatory alter ego Raven Six.
She said a quick hello to Tigz who was catching up with Vicky Butterfly whose Moon act is a sight to behold! The amazing Rubyyy Jones whose skype act made us laugh out loud at a recent blogger event looked cute in bright make up.
She took some great photos at the event and sadly discovered today that they were erased by her computer and wiped off her memory card! Here is a photo of Mark and Sarah taken by Joe Boneshaker Armitageone of the other amazing artists in the show.
Mark and Sarah (especially Mark) are big fans of cake at their events. We love to eat them but have always been a bit baffled as to why cucpakes and baking seem to have become part of the modern “vintage” scene. Having said that here are the incredible Sugar (yes sugar!) busts that greeted the guests made by the amazing Cake Follies with their beautiful hand painted cupcakes which all tied into the exhibition and were delicious.
As well as Mark’s shimmering, splendid paintings Gemma really liked the clean graphic work by Joe Boneshaker Armitage
Becky Ryan’s sketches had a really intimate feel.
The exhibition, A Brush with Burlesque shows until Sunday 13th May 2012 – 1.00pm – 7.00pm at East Gallery, 214, Brick Lane, London E1 6SA.
The gallery will be run by Mark and Sarah so make sure you say hello when you go to see this unmissable show.
